Zhang Yiding is a Chinese artist. Currently lives and works in the U.K (London), and China.

我与威尼斯第一次的相遇是在去年的12月份,然而因为时间的关系我仅仅在这座迷人美丽的城 市停留了一天。用声音和旋律去构建和描写一段我对威尼斯和双年展的概念和画面是一件非常 有趣的事情,同时我接受了这次特别项目的邀请,作为这样的“transbordering-art”,我还能说 什么呢,似乎每一个申请人心中都有一团火焰在心中燃烧着,燃烧的不仅是我们对当代艺术体 系挑战以及猎奇还有反叛的决心,更包含了策划项目的朋友的心血,我们能做的不多,但是我 们可以发出自己的声音让这个世界听到。想了想自己别的作品形式,似乎还是太苍白无力,幸 好手中还有一份来自威尼斯的声音和记忆,不如转化为一首主题曲,来点燃我们前方充满荆棘 和冒险的道路吧 。
My encounter with the Venice for the first time was in December 2016, however, I just stay here where the attractive beautiful city only one day.With voice and melody to construct and describe a Venice biennale and the concept , the picture is a very interesting thing, at the same time I accept the invitation, special projects, such as "transbordering - art", what else can I say, every applicant seemed to have a fire in our hearts which is burning, it's not only the contemporary art system but also our determination to challenge and seek novelty and rebellion, more contains a planning project that puts a lot efforts from our friend, we cannot do much of that, but we can let them heard our voice from all over the world.My works seems to be too pale, fortunately there is a voice and memory from Venice, as into a theme song, to ignite our road ahead which full of thorns and adventure.
问题很简单,成为⼀名成功的艺术家,就要有钱。这里不不是说拿钱去砸出⼀一 些事情来,⽽是有了了钱你可以做很多东西出来,可以找⼈做事情,可以找场地做展览,还可以拉关系套近乎。 这是最基本的层⾯面,⼀一个成功的艺术家我觉得肯定是有空间代理他/她的作品, 当然成功的艺术家他们的作品好不好,厉不厉害也说不不清楚。 我觉得这个问题看起来很俗很好答,但好像怎么也说不不清楚,在我现在的印象里 应该是做过⼤大型的展览,媒体曝光采访过很多次,所谓上头条吧,作品价位很高,被很多空间,⼤大腕⼉收藏,在拍卖行很⽕火爆,身价排⾏榜很⾼。
有啊,每个⼈人都很想说,我知道,我想说的太多了了有时候觉得,我始终认为自己不不是这个圈⼦子的⼀员,到了了国外之后,我觉得我离这个圈⼦子更更远了。我属于边缘中的边缘,只是在朋友圈默默的点个赞那种。 想进这个圈子,要有颜值(我颜值不不⾼高),要有才华,要有⽜牛逼的作品,要有吸 引⼈人的魅力,要有⾼的情商和智商,要会喝酒(这个我⼀一直这么觉得),要会吹 牛逼,要会捧场。我很早的时候以为只要有牛逼的作品就可以了了,但是感觉又没 那么简单。 我所知道的当代艺术圈,很窄,我在武汉⻓大,还是⼀名默默⽆无闻的学⽣生⽽而已。 我对这个圈⼦子的印象就是在每次展览的开幕式现场,这个圈⼦子挺复杂的让我觉得,说实话我懂得不不是特别多,总之你要会social。 慢慢跟着混吧,我不好多说了,怕得罪⼈人。
威尼斯双年展,这么⼤大的一个展,这么⼤的⼀一个名字,谁不不知道这个展。我决定参加这个特别项目,纯粹是想多参加点展览,多搞点事情,我不不想太计较后果,参展这个事情没什么特别的,谁不不想露⾯曝光。我厌倦在学校做展览了, 不不想这么天天在⼀个国外学校,在⼀个环境和语言以及⽣活都限制和压制你的地方做展览然后拿杯wine去social来social去的,⼤大家散了了第二天跟什什么都没发⽣生 一样。这叫打⻜飞机,我看不下去了了。我的⼒量,我的能⼒,我的精⼒,我的时间都很有限,每个⼈不不可能都听你的,那就不不是⺠主了了。我所在的地区并不不是不好,资源什么的也很棒,可是⼀件事情当你想亲身参与并还想获得存在感的时 候,你就会意识到这不不是个坐在家里就能想好怎么去做的事情。因为你在这里举目无亲,没有圈⼦,朋友也不不多,交情也还没跟上。
很⽜逼,⾄至少作为中国人,⾸首先是要一线的艺术家吧,其次,没到那个年年龄和阅历,资历,也不不太可能参加或被选中吧。还有我猜想是不是如果作品在⻄方 有⼀定名⽓气或者知名度很⾼就有可能了。 当然这个是真的“选”出来的吗?我甚⾄觉得有⼀一部分应该是内定的吧?很复杂的感觉,我也不懂,我太嫩,太年轻。希望这次参与的特别项目能让我对它产生一些认识,谢谢。
- Why do you do art?
For me , Art is a kind of habit, I am a student as studying in academy of art, so I have to do something which is related to art, it is like my job, but I still don't know whether it will become of my career or not .To be honest, I'm worried about my student life when it is completely finished as i graduated , I wandering the motivation for making art afterwards ,as I’m not a student anymore.
- How to become a successful artist?
This is a simple question , i mean, if you want to be a successful artist, you must very rich .It is not about take money to hit out some things, but with money you can do a lot of things ,such as you can find someone to help you, you can make a exhibition, to find someone which build a special connection with you. This is the basic level, as a successful artist, certainly a space or gallery can acting on his/her work. However, everyone have different criteria in terms of the successful artists. I think the problem seems very easy to answer, but also i have to say maybe the answer are can not very clearly enough , in my personal view, a successful artist should be have lots of large solo exhibition, interviewed by media many times, which is so-called headlines, and their works very expensive, which also collected by lots of famous museum or art institution . Finally ,they are very active in many mainstream auction .
- Do you have some words to say to the Art circle?
Everyone is trying to say:”oh yes, I know, I want to say something for this !”But sometimes i think, I'm not a member of this circle , after i studying in the foreign country , I feel i am more far away from them . I’m belong to the edge of the edge, If you want to get into this circle, you probably need some requirements : a high level of appearance (my appearance level is not good enough) ,a talent from your personality , attractive , have a high EQ and IQ, good at ( I can’t agree anymore), to be cool, to be famous. At an early age I thought that only if your works quite good it should be fine , but the things are not simple as we think . I grew up in wuhan, my hometown ,as an unknown art student. My impression of this circle is stoped at the opening ceremony of the exhibition . Anyway, its a quite complicated circle , I don’t know not about it , but at least one thing you should know— social. I could not say too much for that, just trying not be offending for someone .
- What made you decide to attend this special programme of Venize Biennale 2017?
The Venice biennale, as a one of the biggest art fair , no one really don’t know it. The reason for me that joined the special program, is just want to attend the exhibition, do something .The consequence are not important for me , and it is not very particularly event as i decided . What we all know is that everyone wants to show up. I was tired of the show in the uni. What’s more, i facing the challenging from the environment and language shock, and there is always much of limitation of my life experience in here. The show just take placed at here where everything are full of limitation and suppress for myself.i don’t like we are too much sociable and holding a cup of wine talking each other again and again , and in next day as if nothing happened. This is what the wanker does , I can’t stand it anymore .My strength, my ability, my energy, my time are limited, if everyone are obey your order , this is not a democracy. Obviously ,London is not bad place for making art , but one thing you should know is that once you want to participate in it, then you will realize that it is not easy as you staying at home make something pleasure for yourself .Because you have no circle, friends, family ,even the friendship is not good enough yet .
- How to be selected by the official program of Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia)?
At least, as a Chinese, first of all , it has to be the most famous artists. Second, it’s unlikely to being selected if lack of the age and experience, qualifications, and so on .Third , I guess it’s possible if your work have highly reputation around western country. However ,this is a real “select”? I i don't know, I'm still too young. Hopefully i can get something from this special projects, thanks.
